Festival Diaghilev. P.S. will be opened on October, 23 with World premiere of Orphic Trilogy by Vladimir Dukelsky in the GRAND HALL of Saint Petersburg Philharmonic performed by the Academic Symphony Orchestra of St Petersburg Philharmonic, Choir of the State St Petersburg Capella, soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre’s opera – Ilya Bannik (bass), Irina Vasilyeva (soprano) and Dmitry Voropayev (tenor), pianist Nikolai Mazhara. Conductor - Scott Dunn (USA). Three pieces by Vladimir Dukelsky are in the programme: Epitaph on Diaghilev’s Deat (1931) The End of Saint-Petersburg (1934) and Dédicaces (1937). Oratorio The End of Saint-Petersburg based on poems by Guillaume Apollinaire.
On Sergey Diaghilev’s request Dukelsky wrote music for ballet “Zephyr and Flora” (1924; first performance took place in Monte Carlo in 1925). Diaghilev called him his “third musical son” (after Stravinsky and Prokofiev).The composer moved to the USA where he became famous under the pseudonym Vernon Duke. George Balanchine also collaborated with the composer and staged 11 ballets to his music.
October, 24 -25 - International musicological conference “Inside Diaghilev’s Circle. Impresario in Dialogue with Composers” will take place in the Memorial Rimsky-Korsakov Museum in his former apartment. Conference keynote speakers are: Richard Taruskin (USA), Stephen Press (USA), Marina Frolova-Walker, (Great Britain), Olga Manulkina (St Petersburg, Russia) with participation of widow of composer Vladimir Dukelsky - Kay Duke Ingalls and conductor Scott Dunn. The exhibition of works by Bakst, Benois, Goncharova and Larionov will open together with the conference.
October, 24, evening, in the SHEREMETEV PALACE there will be concert “Musical Dialogue at the Turn of Centuries”. The programme will include music by Sergey Diaghilev, Alexander Knaifel, Dmitri Kourliandski, Sergej Newski, Boris Tischenko, Alexandra Filonenko performed by Oleg Malov, Dinara Mazitova, Alexander Diaghilev, Maxim Pankov,Sergey Tchirkov and Mikhail Krutik.
October, 25 – exhibition “Contemporary artists about Ballets Russes and Sergey Diaghilev” will open in ANNA NOVA ART GALLERY. Exhibition presents works by Peter Shvetsov, Andrey Bartenev, Vladislav Mamyshev-Monro, Valery Katsuba, Alexander Dashevsky, Stas Bags.
October, 25, evening – in the ALEXANDRINSKY THEATRE – concert “Masterpieces of French Baroque. Jean-Philippe Rameau” by MusicAeterna Symphony Orchestra of the Perm opera and ballet theatre. Conductor - Theodor Currentzis, Golden Masque award winner of 2010 as the best conductor of Russia. Soloist – Barbara Hannigan – one of the most significant performers of Baroque music. She has performed with many leading orchestras and ensembles under the conduction of Sir Simon Rattle, Pierre Boulez, Reinbert de Leeuw, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kurt Masur. She also made her own conducting debut at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with Igor Stravinsky's Renard, and her appearances in Sasha Waltz’s performance of Passion and Matsukaze by Toshio Hosokawa, requiring physical and vocal expression, made an extraordinary impression.
October, 26 – at the SHEREMETEV PALACE opening of the exhibition “Maria Callas forever…” together with Foundation of Social and Cultural Initiatives and Direction of International Programmes. Personal belongings of Maria Callas such as costumes, photographs, sketches, etc. provided by Maria Callas International Cultural Association in Venice – will be displayed.
October, 26 and 27, evening - Angelin Preljocaj will present ballet “Snow White” in the ALEXANDRINSKY THEATRE. Music by Gustav Mahler. Choreography - Angelin Preljocaj, costumes - Jean Paul Gaultier, set design - Thierry Leproust, lighting - Patrick Riou.
October, 27– in the State Museum of Theatre and Music there will be a roundtable discussion “Between Success and Scandal. Diaghilev’s Modus Vivendi.” featuring Sergey Nikolaevich (“Snob”), Karina Dobrotvorskaya (VOGUE), Ekaterina Istomina (“Kommersant”), Pavel Kaplevich, Natalia Metelitsa.
October, 27, evening – Ballet Gala “The Two Poles of Dance” in the HERMITAGE THEATRE: I part - performance by the Vaganova Ballet Academy, II part - performance by company “TOP 9” with a new performance “The Writer”.
In 2011 the Festival establishes a special award "Ettone moi!" for original creative project that brings together different national cultures in the world of art. The awarding ceremony will take place at the Hermitage Theatre on October, 27.
October, 28, Honored Artist of Russia, laureate of all main theatrical awards including “Golden Masque”, production designer, scene-designer, producer from Moscow - Pavel Kaplevich will present exhibition of gobelins - “Eye to Eye. Diaghiev and Nizhinsky” in the STATE MUSEUM OF THEATRE AND MUSIC.
October, 28, Grand Closing Ceremony of the Festival will take place at the SHEREMETEV PALACE.
September, 8 – December,5 – within the frames of the Festival exhibition “Motion, form, dance” will take place at the Marble Palace (State Russian Museum).
First Festival Diaghilev. P.S. took place in 2009 – centenary of Ballets Russes of Sergey Diaghilev. Many events of the Festival were revelations for Saint-Petersburg public, people could see them for the first time. Hamburg Ballet presented ballet “Le Pavilion d'Armide” outside Germany for the first time. Closing Gala-concert showed works by the best choreographers of the ХХ century – from Mikhail Fokin and George Balanchine to Angelin Preljoçaj and Alexey Ratmansky. Pieces of art which had been never displayed in Russia before enriched the exhibition “Dance” in State Hermitage. It was a unique opportunity for many of Saint-Petersburg citizens to see masterpieces from Tate Gallery (London, Great Britain) and Musee d'Orsay (Paris, France).
In March 2011 Festival Diaghilev. P.S. presented the programme “Russian Maslenitsa in Rome”. The exhibition “Russian Winter” (L'Inverno Russo) in the National Museum of Folk Traditions and Art displayed to the Italian audience more than 300 objects from 6 famous Russian museums. The Festival also organized an open-air show “Russian Maslenitsa” in Piazza del Popolo and defile of costumes “Saint-Petersburg” during Roman Carnival.
Following the tradition of bringing together in its programme main cultural institutions of Saint-Petersburg, this year Festival Diaghilev. P.S. cooperates with the State Hermitage, State Russian Museum, Saint-Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music, Alexandrinsky Theatre, Saint-Petersburg State Capella, Saint-Petersburg State Philharmonic, Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov Saint-Petersburg Conservatory, Anna Nova Gallery. This year the Festival also has among its partners the Moscow Foundation of social and cultural initiatives and Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre.
