The exhibition shows the best part of graphics and paintings of the legendary Lobanov-Rostovsky collection purchased by the International Charitable Fund "Konstantinovsky" . The exhibits were loaned to the Saint-Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music and will be put on temporary display in September.

The collection belonged to Nikita and Nina Lobanov-Rostovsky is the largest collection of Russian Theatre art from 1870-1930.

  The collection presents various national art schools and movements in Russia from symbolism and realism to cubism and suprematism. The display shows a diverse group of objects from the collection. Major exhibits feature costumes and theatre sets made in different painting and graphics techniques. The top works in the collection include priceless theatre posters. Among them there are posters created by V. Serov for Anna Pavlova performances, posters by O. Rozanova for " The Victory over the sun" and for the tragedy " Vladimir Mayakovsky ", poster of Filonov school for "The Government Inspector (Revizor) and others.

The Prince Lobanov -Rostovsky collection of Russian art assisted in the artistic development of theatre art in the west. Diagilev's Ballets Russes and Russian theatre art were cut off from Russia by World War 1 and later on considered in Russia as the envy of the West. Much vital information about these artworks was censored and not published . As a result, the theatre art of that period was not represented in the museums of Russia and was not studied. Also, the collection displays the performances created the glory of the Soviet theatre art of 1920-1930. Through the stage - and costume designs of Stenberg brothers, A. Vesnin, G. Yakoulov, V. Stepanov, A. Rodchenko, L. Popova, V. Muchina and many others artists of theatre art create the atmosphere and images of great productions and performances created by V. Meyerhold, A.Tairov, N. Evreinov and others.

  The unique Lobanov -Rostovsky collection was represented in various exhibitions and publications of art catalogues such as the Exibition Catalogue- raisonne " Painter's of Russian theatre. 1880-1930. Collection of Nikita and Nina Lobanov-Rostovsky. " (vol.1-2, Moscow, Iskusstvo, 1990-1994) compiled by John E.Bowlt , a well-known specialist in the history of Russian theater art. This book contains a description of the entire collection of Nikita and Nina Lobanov-Rostovsky and most comprehensive catalogue of the exhibits. In addition, the book provides an information such as a list of art groups, reference to printed matter, list of exhibitions, programs, chronological list, and other information.
