THE MARIINSKY THEATRE. 1783 - 2003. THEME AND VARIATIONS

The exhibition is dedicated to the oldest musical theatre in Russia.

For more than two centuries the historical mission of the Mariinsky Theatre - the cradle of national opera and Russian ballet - has been to discover the new pathways of art. The images, created on this famous stage in the past, became the legends of theatre history. The present day life of the Mariinsky is the definite sign of the renaissance of our culture.

The exhibition highlights selected pages of the history of the Mariinsky Theatre and the outstanding masters who created this history. Anna Pavlova and Galina Ulanova as Giselle, Carlotta Brianza and Marina Semenova as Aurora, Pierina Legnani and Ul'yana Lopatkina as Odetta, Matilda Kshesinskaya and Tatiana Vecheslova as Esmeralda, Olga Preobrazhenskaya and Natalia Dudinskaya as Raymonda, roles of Vakhtang Chabukiani, Konstantin Sergeyev, Rudolf Nureyev, Feodor Chaliapin - are the gold fund of the world theatre culture.

The theatre cherishes the memory of the distinguished conductors, artists and directors Eduard Napravnik, Vladimir Dranishnikov, Alexander Golovin, Alexander Benois, Vsevolod Meyerhold. The theatre's present Artistic Director Valery Gergiev carries on a permanent creative dialogue with his well-known predecessors.

The Mariinsky Theatre has always been and remains nowadays a phenomenon of contemporary culture. That means that the theatre preserves and develops the great traditions. The exhibition harmoniously combines the present and the past. The leading performers of the premiers of The Queen of Spades, Boris Godunov, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, operas of Richard Wagner meet the stars of the contemporary versions of these masterpieces.

Unfortunately, many names and titles have not been included in the exhibition - no exhibition can tell about all the events of theatre history and present all the creators of the miracle which we call "Your Majesty the Theatre". Besides that, not all the deeds and creative careers could be presented through museum objects, those silent witnesses and keepers of the theatre memory - time has not been merciful to them.

In the halls of the interactive area the visitor is encouraged to touch "the miracles" of the theatre technique of the past, to explore theatrical props, "to find himself" behind the scenes. (250 - 350 exhibits)
