Set design for the opera “The Snow Maiden” by Rimsky-Korsakov. The Curtain. 1911. The collection of the St.-Petersburg State Museum of theatre and Music

“The Snow Maiden” has a special place among the other operas by Rimsky-Korsakov: he himself considered that score the best of his theatric works and that “he has felt himself the mature musician and opera composer” when he was working on that piece. The exhibition dedicated to “The Snow Maiden” opens series of projects presenting operatic works by Rimsky-Korsakov and the rich collection of the Museum of Theatre and Music will help to pay deserved attention to each of his operas.

Our contemporaries used to the free transferring of action along the timeline will have the rare opportunity to return back to the traditional staging following the author’s message. The unique items such as costumes of the Snow Maiden, Berendey, Skomorokh designed by K. Korovin, a costume of a Tree (1898) by E. Ponomarev, set designs by K. Ivanov (Berendey’s Palace), K. Korovin (The Secret Wood), D. Stelletsky (the curtain, Berendey’s chambers), the rare photos of famous singers presenting the main characters of the opera will be put on display during the exhibition. St Petersburg Doll Museum will also present during the exhibition puppets made after designs by K. Korovin (Snow Maiden, Kupava, Lel, Mizgir, Berendey).

This exhibition opens series of cultural events dedicated to the 40th anniversary of Rimsky-Korsakov Museum.
