Illustrations of Tatar artists to the works by Gabdullah Tukay
from collection of the State Museum of Fine Arts, Republic Tatarstan
St Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music in co-operation with the Ministry of Culture (RT), the State Museum of Fine Arts (RT) and the Tatar Cultural Autonomy (St Petersburg) presents this project as a part of the wide celebration program of Tukay's anniversary.
The exhibition presents the audience “the golden fund” of the graphic art of Tatarstan, more than 60 illustrations to the most famous works by Tukay created by five outstanding Tatar artists in 20th century: Baki Urmanche, Bainazar Almenov, Faizrakhman Aminov, Irina Kolmogortseva and Nadir Al'meyev. Their works are created in a wide range of techniques, from ink and watercolour drawing to coloured print. One can see how different might be their “vision” of Tukay's text, how their artistic language comments the literal original enriching it with new associations, the illustration equaling the text by means of another art.
Exhibited works were part of Tukay's editions issued in Kazan, Moscow and Leningrad yet a copy cannot replace the original work and fully transmit its mastery. The exhibited original works let us appreciate these works at their true value.
The best craft-work items from the collection of the State Museum of Fine Arts (RT) and music Tatar national instruments from the Theatre Museum help to re-create cultural atmosphere of Tatarstan in the early 20th century.
